Course Presentation

The Data Science course offered by TechLabs Rotterdam is designed to equip learners with essential data analysis skills, focusing on both theoretical understanding and practical application. The program is part of their Digital Shaper Program, which combines online learning with hands-on projects and community events.

Purpose and aims:
The course aims to introduce learners to the fundamentals of data science, including data manipulation, visualization, and machine learning techniques. It is structured to help participants gain a strong foundation in programming, with the option to learn in either Python or R. The course provides an opportunity to work on real-world projects, preparing learners for a career in one of the most in-demand fields today.

Target Audience:
The course is suitable for beginners with no prior experience, as well as those who already have some knowledge of programming or data science. The program is flexible enough to cater to different skill levels, offering tailored tracks depending on the participant’s experience and learning preferences.

Key Knowledge and Skills Developed:
Participants will learn:

General programming skills in Python or R
Data exploration techniques to derive useful insights
Application of machine learning models for tasks such as customer segmentation or churn prediction
How to present results effectively through data visualization

Course Structure and Deep Tech Elements:
The course is divided into two main phases: hands-on learning and theory-based learning. The hands-on phase is for those interested in applying machine learning algorithms quickly, while the theory phase delves deeper into the mathematical foundations of algorithms like regression and neural networks. Both tracks include exercises and access to TechLabs Notebooks for practice. Key topics include data wrangling, machine learning, and project work that brings real-world relevance to the skills learned.

Teaching and Assessment:
The course follows a blended learning approach, combining remote online learning with in-person mentorship and events at the local TechLabs hub. Assessment is project-based, with participants working in small teams to complete a data science project. The culmination of the course is a final pitch event, where learners present their projects and receive feedback from mentors and peers. Successful completion of the project earns participants a certification.

Practical Information:
Duration: The course can be completed in 4-5 months (6-8 hours/week).
Location: TechLabs Rotterdam offers both in-person and remote options.
Cost: The course is free, thanks to TechLabs’ volunteering community-driven learning model.
Certificate: Upon successful project completion, learners receive a certificate.
This course offers a comprehensive introduction to data science with a strong emphasis on deep tech skills, especially machine learning, making it an excellent starting point for anyone looking to enter this growing field
