Course Presentation
Focus on the invisible is an online course designed with the aim of providing an in-depth and complete vision of the world of microscopes, advanced microscopic techniques and the skills necessary to master digital imaging. The general objectives of the course include:
● Provide tools to understand how microscopes work, from the study of the fundamental laws governing optics, to the concepts underlying the most advanced technologies.
● Develop skills related to the most advanced microscopic techniques present in research laboratories.
● Acquire theoretical and operational skills regarding digital imaging techniques
The course is made up of 23 modules and it is divided into two stages: stage 1, basic, made up of 10 modules and stage 2, advanced, made up of 13 modules.
At the end of stage 1 (basic) learners receive a milestone certificate which can also act as an exhit certificate for those who do not intend to continue to the stage 2 (advanced). However we expect learners to attend both stages. The learning outcomes of those who have attended both stages will be considered.
Each module provides a video presentation that introduces the topic covered and a self-assessment questionnaire which allows students to check their understanding of the key concepts presented in the module.
In some modules, there are technical sheets, in-depth texts, practical exercises and experimental tests involving the use of microscopic instruments in specialized laboratories. These practical sessions offer students the opportunity to directly apply the knowledge they have acquired and develop operational skills.
The modules of the course are available on WeSchool, an Italian educational platform that offers tools and resources to support online learning and classroom management that aims to improve the digital education experience. Students can interact with each other and with experts through the platform
The course is curated by experts coming from leading institutions, including prestigious universities, cutting-edge research centers and industry-leading technology companies, ensuring high-quality education and access to up-to-date knowledge.
The scientific coordinator of the course is Dr. Spartaco Santi, researcher at the Institute of Molecular Genetics IGM-CNR, head of the Digital Microscopy Center at the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute and curator of the specialized scientific dissemination project “School of Microscopy” The courses have the patronage of the Department of Experimental, Diagnostic and Specialty Medicine (DIMES), University of Bologna.
