Promoting education and career opportunities: A conversation with Luz Fernández from TecnoCampus

“All the partners need visibility for what we are doing, as well as networking opportunities. Connecting with other partners, universities, and technological parks is essential. The EIT Deep Tech Talent Initiative can enhance visibility and foster the best practices we need to succeed.”

In a recent conversation, Luz Fernández, a representative from EIT Deep Tech Talent Initiative’s Pledger, TecnoCampus based in Barcelona, shared the motivations and goals behind its innovative initiatives. TecnoCampus Science and innovation Campus, a combination of a university centre and a technology park, a real ecosystem where university and companies go hand in hand. It is affiliated with Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) and offers degrees and master’s programs in technology, health, business, and cultural industries.

Luz explained: “We applied to the EIT Deep Tech Talent Initiative because we are focused on training in these technologies. Two years ago, we created a centre for lifelong learning programs that I manage. We are offering various programs to help people advance their careers, as the industry in Barcelona is looking for professionals in these fields.”

Their courses are designed for professionals who are currently working but want to increase their knowledge or develop new skills for career advancement. The training programs generally attract a balanced mix of men and women. Participants typically range from 20 to 55 years old, and most of them are professionals eager to advance their careers or explore new areas of knowledge.

TecnoCampus also targets unemployed individuals looking to change careers. “We have a program specifically for unemployed women and programs for people with disabilities. These programs offer opportunities to train in fields that are currently in high demand in our economic environment.”

Promoting educational and career opportunities in deep tech fields with a strong commitment to inclusion by addressing the needs of different demographic groups is an exciting new challenge.

“It’s challenging because we are incorporating new technologies, which requires more expertise not only in industry but also within universities. We are working on new education models, including online programs. However, teaching online programs to people with disabilities can be particularly challenging. Still, deep tech is a crucial sector that demands this kind of professional training.”
