Our pledge
Deep Tech technologies are essential for the University of Barcelona (UB) and our region, Catalonia, as they play a crucial role in conducting cutting-edge research and educating future professionals. UB, being an avant-garde university, already hosts several faculties dedicated to hard tech, offering courses in Deep Technologies. We provide bachelor degrees in Biotechnology, Electronics, Informatics, Medicine, and more. Additionally, our master’s programs encompass fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Quantum Science and Technology, Photonics, as well as advanced materials like Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Nuclear Physics, and Advanced Materials. We have ambitious plans to expand this portfolio in the coming years.
Catalonia provides a fertile ground for the establishment of Deep Tech startups. In 2021, the region boasted 291 active companies, making up 15.3% of the total Catalan startup ecosystem. The creation and funding of these startups are experiencing exponential growth, and UB is actively supporting them in collaboration with local actors such as BCNActiva, BIOCat, and TechBarcelona Pier 01. Our dedicated unit, StartUB!, is committed to developing the entrepreneurial potential of the UB community by offering tailored education, incubation, and mentoring to help consolidate their capabilities.

To bolster the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship (i&e) among our students, UB has introduced a significant change in 2021. We now offer i&e training to all students through the TRUE project, which was initiated as a pilot project under the first call HEI Innovate. The TRUE project’s goal is to enhance our students’ employability and the competitiveness of our region by fostering their entrepreneurial mindset. Building on this foundation, we plan to further strengthen i&e education, particularly focusing on the deep tech dimension, to empower students in Deep Tech areas and contribute even more to the entrepreneurship ecosystem.
